Lakes and Gardens Rajasthan LAKESThe lakes of Rajasthan are the most tranquil and relaxing places to rejuvenate oneself. The pictographic lakes of Rajasthan entreat the visitors to a world of wonder and amazement. Rajasthan is festooned with several exotic lakes. Besides the natural ones, there are also a number of man-made lakes in Rajasthan, which serve as water reservoirs to the local populace. The first impression on visiting Rajasthan is its aridity as a desert region. It is almost surprising to see the embryonic flowers in the vast countryside gardens saturated in celestial aroma and fresh zephyr. These gardens are the epitome of the victory of human will over the starkness of the nature. It is truly a pleasure to stroll through them with all their charming pavilions and fountains that embellish them. » Ana Sagar Lake Ajmer Ana Sagar Lake is a man-made lake situated in the city of Ajmer. It is named after the emperor Anaji Chauhan, who got it constructed during 1135 -1150 AD. Later on some additions were made to the lake by the Mughal emperors Jehangir (Daulat Bagh Gardens) and Shahjahan (Baradari, a marble pavilion) to augment the splendor of the lake. » Fateh Sagar Lake Udaipur Fateh Sagar Lake is another man-made lake, constructed by Maharana Jai Singh. Later on Maharana Fateh Singh got this lake reconstructed. So, the lake got named after him only. It is situated in Udaipur to the north of Lake Pichola. The scenery around Fateh Sagar Lake will surely capture your heart. The lake serves as a major source of drinking water for Udaipur. The lake also has three islands, one is called Nehru Park, the second has a solar observatory and the third one has a jet fountain. A boat ride to these islands is quite entertaining. » Gadsisar Lake Jaisalmer Located in Jaisalmer, Gadsisar Lake is the only source of water supply for the city. Built by Maharwal Garsisingh, this lake was intended to serve as a reservoir to conserve rainwater. The lake is an exception worth seeing. On the banks of the river, are a number of small temples and cenotaphs. At times, you can spot some amazing birds around this lake. » Kailana Lake Jaisalmer Lake Kailana is situated approximately 11 km from Jaisalmer. The lake proffers some stunning scenery and a peaceable ambiance. It is an idyllic picnic spot providing the visitors with the kind of refreshment they were in quest of. Lake Kailana is also recognized for the irresistible and inimitable vista of the sun melting into the horizon in the evening. » Lake Pichola Udaipur Lake Pichola is bordered by absorbing hills, showcasing a spectacular vision. Maharaja Udai Singh got this lake widened. Later on, Maharaja Jagjit Singh added two islands in the middle of the lake, now known as Jag Niwas (Lake Palace) and Jag Mandir. Lake Pichola also has a masonry dam known as the Badipol. At the east bank of the lake, stands the City Palace encircled by an array of marble temples, mansions and palaces and a number of bathing ghats » Sardar Samand Lake Nestled approximately 60 km from Jodhpur, is the elegant Sardar Samand Lake. Maharaja Umaid Singh got this lake constructed in 1933. As you drive down to the lake, you might come across chinkaras or black bucks. Adding further pleasure to the trip are the jovial, friendly and welcoming inhabitants of the Bishnoi villages. Besides the serene backdrop, the other attractions include a multiplicity of migratory birds inhabiting around the lake. Also, worth visiting is the summer palace of Maharaja Umaid Singh, the Sardar Samand Lake Resort, with its expansive grounds and gardens. GARDENS » Bada Bagh: Situated 3 km from Jaisalmer, Bada Bagh is a prolific retreat in the appealing milieu of a rain fed lake and a dam in the middle of the plateau. Constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh II, much of the city's fruit and vegetables are produced here and above it are royal cenotaphs with daintily engraved ceilings and equestrian statuettes of former rulers.» Ram Niwas Garden: Located in Jaipur in 1868, the elegant Ram Niwas Gardens was laid down by Maharaja Ram Singh II, as a famine relief project. The exotic garden accommodates a zoo, an aviary, a greenhouse, a herbarium, a museum and several sports complexes. The Albert Hall museum is especially recognized for its Indo-Saracenic structure. Recently there have been some additions such as Rabindra Manch with an auditorium, a modern art gallery and an open-air theatre. » Vidyadhar Garden: Situated near the Sisodia Gardens of Jaipur, Vidyadhar Garden, is a gorgeous vineyard dedicated to Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya, the architect of the city of Jaipur who planned the town using the principles laid down in the Shilpa Shastra (an ancient Hindu treatise on architecture). These tiered gardens house several galleries, pavilions and lovely murals depicting scenes from the life of Lord Krishna. » Gulab Bagh: Translated as 'The Garden of Roses', Gulab Bagh is located in the Sajjan Niwas Park, Udaipur. Constructed by Sajjan Singh in the late 19th Century, the Gulab Bagh swanks multiple varieties of roses available all over the world. It houses Saraswati Bhawan Library (originally called the Victoria Hall) which was built to memorialize Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The Aravalli Express, a toy train shows off the garden in a most gratifying manner. » Sahelion Ki Bari: Saheliyon-ki-Bari or the 'Garden of the Maids of Honor' of Udaipur was once reserved for the royal ladies who came here for a stroll. A well planned garden, with sprawling lawns and shaded walks situated on the banks of the graceful Fateh Sagar Lake was constructed in 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh. It was built for the forty-eight young ladies sent along with the Queen as part of the dowry. There are many fountains in the four picturesque pools of the garden and it prides over chiseled and molded cubicles and marble elephants. » Mandore Gardens: Situated 9 km from Jodhpur, Mandore was once the capital of Marwar. The all-embracing gardens with high rock terraces shelter the remains of the former capital along with the cenotaphs of Jodhpur rulers. The most amazing attraction of the Mandore gardens is the memorial of Maharaja Ajit Singh. Its highlights include the graphic Hall of Heroes, a rock wall with high reinforcement, gaudy paintings representing scenes from the life of local heroes such as Pabuji and Chamunda and crowded modern shrine of 30 Crores gods. Mandore Gardens also provide the perfect venue for the much celebrated Marwar Festival. » Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh: The Sisodia Rani-ka-Bagh of Jaipur is the principal and most famed garden built by Sawai Jai Singh II for his Sisodia Queen. This layered garden comprises of striking fountains, watercourses and painted pavilions. Several other picturesque gardens were also shaped in the 18th and 19th centuries by the kings and their courtiers.
