The Shekhawati region of Rajasthan is famed for its splendidly painted Havelis. Constructed by rich merchants of the region, these Havelis represent an inimitable style of architecture. Most of the buildings date back to the 18th century to early 20th century. Shekhawati region is also well known as open-air art gallery. Jhunjhunun, Mandawa, Fatehpur and Nawalgarh are the major towns of Shekhawati.

» Shekhawati History
The Shekhawati region lies north of Jaipur. This was the land where Marwari businessmen started constructing their mansions or havelis in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The two major communities of this region were the Rajputs and the Marwaris - one with the will to fight and die for his honor and the other true businessmen. During the British period, trade rivalry pushed the Marwaris to port, but the love for their land always remained supreme. While wars and treaties decided the fate of a few and the conditions of the peasantry remained the same.

Lachhmangarh Fort: One of the most imposing forts in the Shekhawati region, Lachhmangarh commands a bird’s eye view of the town modeled to resemble the city plan of Jaipur. Founded in the early 19th century by Raja Lachhman Singh of Sikar, the town holds some gorgeous havelis.

Mandawa: Founded in the 18th century, the medieval fort of Mandawa dominates the town with a painted arched gateway adorned with Lord Krishna and his cows. The registered painting in the art gallery is a real treat to the visitors.

Alsisar and Malsisar: Founded in the late and mid 18th centuries respectively, the towns of Alsisar and Malsisar lie at the northern edge of Shekhawati. Shekhawati Travel Tours,Rajasthan TourShekhawati Havelis: There are several havelis in Shekhawati built by the wealthy merchants. They represented the affluence and the success of the merchants. Rich in artistic tradition, these havelis were built in the early 20th century. The carvings and the artistic works in these havelis also depict mythological themes as well as the images of huge animals. The main feature of these havelis are the frescoes that are seen almost everywhere i.e. on the facades, gateways, courtyard walls parapets and ceilings.
