The way to Ranakpur is adorned with fascinating vistas complimented by plush green vales and lustrous streams, which drive away all fatigue of the journey. The Ranakpur Jain Temple was erected during the reign of the moderate and talented monarch Rana Kumbha in the 15th century. An enormous basement covering 48,000 sq. feet area with four subsidiary shrines, twenty-four pillared halls and domes supported by over four hundred columns. » Ranakpur History Famed for some exceptionally carved Jain temples in amber stone, Ranakpur is one of the five holy places of the Jain community. Situated some 96 km from Udaipur, these temples were constructed in the 15th century A.D. during the reign of Rana Kumbha. All of these temples are enclosed within a wall. The central Chaumukha or four-faced temple is dedicated to the revered Jain Tirthankara Rishabhji. Opening on all four sides, the temple preserves the four faced image of Adinath. Sprawling over 48,000 sq.feet, the Chaumukha temple is an attractive creation with 29 halls and 1,444 distinctly carved pillars. Images of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras are imprinted on the 'mandaps' or porticoes in a corridor around the shrine with each mandap having a shikhar or apex beatified with little bells on the top. The gentle breeze drifting through the corridors move the bells whose celestial music encompasses the entire temple milieu. Rising in three storeys, the temple has four small shrines with 80 spires supported by 420 columns. Two temples, dedicated to the Jain saints-Pars vanath and Neminath, face the main temple. The temples possess gorgeous carvings similar to that of Khajuraho. » Tourist Attractions in RanakpurRanakpur Jain Temple: The Ranakpur Jain Temple was constructed during the reign of the noninterventionist and talented monarch Rana Kumbha in the 15th century AD. An enormous basement covering 48,000 sq. ft area coupled with four subsidiary shrines, twenty-four pillared halls and appropriate domes supported by over four hundred columns. There are 1,444 columns in all, which are intricately carved. The artistically carved nymphs playing the flute in various dance postures at a height of 45 feet are an engrossing sight. In the assembly hall, there are two big bells weighing 108 kgs whose sound echoes in the entire complex. Ghanerao: Another nearby place, Ghanerao, has plenty of Hindu temples, worth visiting. Most amazing is the temple of Gajanand with a life-size statue of the goddesses Riddhi and Siddhi. The statue in the main shrine is guarded by idols of Hanuman and Bhairon on either side. Muchhal Mahavir Temple: The Muchhal Mahavir temple is located about 5 km from Ghanerao in the Kumbhalgarh Sanctuary. Its striking facet is the statue of Lord Mahavira with a moustache. The two statues of elephants guarding the gateways are excellent instances of temple embellishment. In the neighborhood, are the Garasia tribal villages famed for their vibrant multihued costumes. Kumbhalgarh: Kumbhalgarh Fort is a historical site around 30 km northeast of Ranakpur. It is the most important fort in the Mewar region after Chittaurgarh. The other important place to visit in Kumbhalgarh is a wildlife sanctuary known for its wolves. Sadri: Sadri, at a distance of 8 km is recognized for some exquisitely designed temples and an old Dargah of Khudabaksh Baba. The Varahavtar temple and the Chintamani Parsvanath temple are the oldest of the temples situated here. Desuri Three Temples: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman and Navi Mata, the temples at Desuri are among some of the eye-catching temples of the world. Situated at Desuri around 16 km from Ranakpur, it also has an old mosque, which is worthvisiting. A temple dedicated to Parsuram Mahadeo, nestled in the hills, is located closeby. » How to Reach Ranakpur By Air: The nearest airport to Ranakpur is in Udaipur. It is 60 km south of Ranakpur. There are flights to Delhi, Jaipur, Aurangabad, Jodhpur, and Mumbai from Udaipur. By Train: The major railway station to Ranakpur is at Udaipur. There are regular trains for Delhi, Chittaurgarh, Ajmer, and Jaipur from the Udaipur station. By Road: Ranakpur is easily accessible by road from Udaipur.
