People continue to reside in these ancient buildings. » Jaisalmer History The history of Jaisalmer is very interesting. The Bhatti Rajput chieftain Rawal Jaisal founded Jaisalmer in 1156. According to legends, the conquered found Jaisalmer as a more secure place to build castle. Therfore, a castle was constructed on the Trikuta Hill. Lord Krishna prophesized that a distant Yadav member would rule here. The legend further enumerates that Lord Krishna had put water on the hill so that Arjuna could drink it when thirsty. The hilltop offered the safest location for a fort, governing and evaluating the desert for miles. The Lunar clan of Bhattis is Krishna's descendant, heroic and most feared of the desert raiders, perpetually protected in territorial tussles with Jodhpur and Bikaner. » Tourist Attractions in Jaisalmer Desert National Park: The Desert National Park presents a brilliant instance of the ecosystem of the Thar Desert and its rich fauna. The Sudashri forest post is the most perfect destination for observing the wildlife in the Desert National Park. Patwon ki Haveli: Built about 300 years ago, the Patwon ki Haveli in Jaisalmer one of the biggest and the most splendid haveli of Rajasthan. The Patwon ki Haveli is a five-storied construction. It is the largest and most convoluted of all structures adorned with manifold carved pillars, colonnades, wall murals, long corridors and ornate chambers. Also attributed as ‘Salim Singh ki haveli’, this haveli is festooned with marvelously arched roof having delicately carved brackets in the shape of peacocks. Salim Singh, the person after whom this haveli is named, was the prime minister of the princely state. The haveli (mansion) is located just below the hill.Gadsisar Lake: Gadsisar is an artificial lake built by Maharawal Gadsi in 14th century. This rainwater lake served as the main source of water for entire town at that time. It continues to store rainwater in the harsh desert landscape and has becomes a preferred location for picnics. The banks of the lake accommodate several small temples and shrines. The road to the lake has a beautiful gateway built by a royal courtesan Tillon in the latter half of 19th century.
