» Bharatpur History
Bharatpur was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD. Bharatpur - the 'Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan', was once an invincible well-fortified city, carved out of the region formerly known as Mewar. The trio of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur has played a key role in the history of Rajasthan. The town Bharatpur derived its name from the name of Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama, whose other brother Laxman was worshipped as the family deity of the Bharatpur. Legends enumerate that Laxman's name is carved on the arms and seals of the state. The city and the fort are believed to have been founded by Rustam, a Jat of Sogariya clan. Maharaja Suraj Mal took over from Khemkaran, the son of Rustam, and established the empire. He fortified the city by constructing an enormous wall encircling the city.

Keoladeo Ghanna National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary: Keoladeo Ghanna National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary would proof to be an ornithologist’s paradise. At one time, the sanctuary served as the royal hunting ground of the princes of Bharatpur. Today, the sanctuary is an abode for the finest variety of birds from around the world. Inhabited by over 400 species of resident water birds, the park is furthermore populated by the annual influx of migratory birds from colder countries (during winter season). Exotic migratory birds from Afghanistan, Central Asia, Tibet as well as Siberia, the Arctics and China, come here in the months of October/ November to spend the winters.

Lohagarh Fort,Bharatpur Tour Packages,Rajasthan Travel Tour Lohagarh Fort: The Lohagarh Fort (also known as Iron Fort) was constructed in the early part of 18th century by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the founder of Bharatpur. Unlike any other fort in the state of Rajasthan, the Lohagarh Fort is known more for the supremacy and luminosity it emanates rather than its beauty. Bordering the fort is a moat, which served as a form of defense against the enemy aggressions. The fort complex maintains three gracefully built palaces which include the Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas. Two of eight imposing towers - Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj continue to stand with pride within the fort premises. These towers were constructed to commemorate Maharaja Suraj Mahal’s victory over the Mughals and the British rulers.

Government Museum: The government museum demonstrates a rich compilation of artifacts dating back to as far as the 2nd century, which also includes a rich array of antiquities, delicate sculptures, ancient inscriptions, etc.

Ganga Mandir (Temple): Ganga Maharani Temple in Bharatpur is indeed the most fascinating among all the temples in the city. Constructed by Maharaja Balwant Singh in 1845, Ganga Mandir is an architectural wonder. The temple has a unique story attached to it. It is believed that all the people employed in the service of the state were asked to donate one month's salary or any increment in their salary for the temple. The temple was constructed out of this money only. The Ganga Temple in Bharatpur houses an attractive idol of the goddess coupled with a massive dummy of a crocodile which is believed to have been the divine carrier of the goddess. The devotees at the temple are offered the holy water from River Ganga that is especially brought from Haridwar each year and kept in a huge silver pot beside the feet of the goddess.
