Karnimata Temple, Deshnok The Karnimata Temple 30 miles south of Bikaner in Deshnoke is dedicated to an early fifteenth century mystic who was considered to be a reincarnation of goddess Durga.
The idiosyncratic aspect of the Karnimata Temple is its voluminous population of brown rats which scuttle all over the complex without any fear. There are so many rats spread on the floor that people have to watch their steps. The rats are assumed to be representative of the souls of dead charans, the traditional bards. Legends believe that the Maharaja of Bikaner had a dream in which the goddess asked him to protect the rats and for this reason, there is bronze wire mesh across the temple. Spotting a white mouse is considered propitious. Devotees with utmost reverence, offer milk, grains and sweets to these rats during the time of aarti..Bikaner's ruler Ganga Singh constructed the entire temple in marble. The domes, the mandap and the panels above the image are carved in silver and gold. The extravagant works that flank the main gate of the temple speaks volumes about the refined artistry of the virtuoso of earlier times. Interestingly, the image of Karnimata hybridizes between Goddess Durga and a normal woman. The image parodies her as slaying the demon but she does not appear with eighteen hands. On the occasion of Navratri, this temple hosts a fair which attracts hordes of pilgrims from places far the near. » How to ReachBikaner is well connected through National Highway with Delhi, Agra, Jodhpur, Jaipur and other cities of India.
