Brahma Temple

Brahma Temple,Rajasthan PilgrimageTour

Pushkar in Rajasthan is an important pilgrim center for Hindus. The Brahma Temple is nuzzled up in the beautiful Pushkar valley renowned for its picturesque beauty. The Brahma Temple is dedicated to Lord Brahma who according to Hindu theology is the Creator of this universe. Brahma is also one among the trinity of Hindu Gods, the other two being Shiva and Vishnu. Legends propound that Lord Brahma, together with all the gods and goddesses performed a Yagna (self-mortification) at the lake. Brahma’s wife Savitri was not present at the Yagna and Brahma married another woman on his impulse. Savitri being chagrined cursed that Brahma would never be worshipped anywhere else.

The Brahma Temple constructed in the 14th century is therefore the only existing temple of Lord Brahma. The Brahma temple stands on a high plinth with marble steps leading up to it. The threshold is ornamented by a red spire and the Hans (goose) emblematic of Brahma. Facing the Garbha Griha (holy sanctorum), sits an elegantly carved silver turtle. The marble floor surrounding the silver turtle is embellished with many silver coins which are imprinted with the names of the donors. Brahma Temple accommodates an image of Lord Vishnu. It has around 400 temples. Pushkar owns around four hundred temples that include a temple dedicated to Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Savitri Temple is another famous temple at Pushkar located in the rear of the Brahma Temple. The Savitri Temple overlooking the lake is indeed a treat to the eyes especially during dawn. The exquisite landscape from the Pop Mochani Temple is worth watching.
