Lohagarh Fortor Iron Fort was built in the early 18th century by the Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal, the founder of Bharatpur. The Lohagarh fort is a lively corroboration to the knight-errantry and fortitude of the Jat rulers of Bharatpur. The fort is circumscribed and guarded by deep moats and derives its name from these invulnerable defenses.
The Lohagarh Fort, true to its name stood steadfast to confront many British attacks. It faced the British onslaught four times and after a long siege they had to withdraw. Lord Lake however was successful in capturing it in 1804.
To commemorate his victories over the Mughals and the British, Maharaja Suraj Mal also built two towers within the barricade- the Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj. Some other angelic monuments in the fort are Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal and Kothi Khas. The entrance gate of Lohagarh fort inculcates an interesting history behind it. It originally belonged to the fort of Chittorgarh but was carried away by Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi. In the late 17th century the victorious Jat armies brought it back from the imperial capital of Delhi to Bharatpur.
