Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Fort,Rajasthan Travel TourBuilt in the 15th century by Raja Rai Singh (one of the most able and trusted generals of Akbar), Junagarh Fort is one of the most arresting forts of Northern India. The fort is an epitome of the expertise of the Rajputs in art and architecture complimented by stories of their valor and forfeit.

The Junagarh Fort of Rajasthan has two main entrances- one is the Karan Pol (Gate) that lies in the east, the other is the Chand Pol lying in the west. The Karan Pol (Gate) built to celebrate the triumph over Aurangzeb, owns Sati Sthambs with imprints of symbolic hands of the royal ladies who committed the act of sati. Adjoining it is theSuraj Pol (Sun Gate). The fort includes within it some very magnificent palaces like Anup Mahal, Ganga Niwas and Rang Mahal or palace of pleasure. The Har Mandir is the regal chapel for the royal family to worship their gods and goddesses. These palaces, constructed in red sandstone and marble, sculpt a pictographic en masse of courtyards, balconies, kiosks and windows speckled all over the structure.

The fort is a rich cornucopia of 37 palaces, temples and pavilions that are marvels in red sandstone edifice. The palaces have dexterously carved windows, balconies, towers and the mirrors, paintings and carved marble panels. The Phool Mahal or Flower Palace is garlanded with delicate glass work and mirror work. The inimitable library of the fort owns a rich anthology of Persian manuscripts, ancient Sanskrit books and an enviable arsenal. Today, Junagarh fort has evolved as one of the leading attractions of the state of Rajasthan and its city Bikaner.
