Jaisalmer Fort Resembling other cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer also preserves a variety of historical monuments speckled all over the city representing assorted facets of its splendid heritage and glorious past. The Jaisalmer fort earns accolades owing to its mesmerizing charisma. The Jaisalmer Fort, locally identified as Sonar Quila is a dominating edifice amidst the golden hued Rajasthan sands. Sited right in the core of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer Fort stands steadfastly on the world tourism map. The golden - yellow sandstone of Jaisalmer Fort dates back to over 800 years and sophisticatedly garnish the Trikuta Hill. The Jaisalmer Fort encompasses five palaces within its premises known as Sarvottam Vilas, Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal and Moti Mahal. These Mahals are exemplary of the fine beauty and a wonderful aide memoire of the grand Rajputana architecture. Since Jaisalmer is, the weather is very hot. Jaisalmer Fort also holds some havelis that were shaped by prosperous merchants of the 1800s who were immensely won over by the noble Rajput architectural design. Accordingly, they employed skilled craftsmen to fabricate these havelis with opulently imprinted interiors and exteriors consummate with dainty casements, elusive pergolas and scenic galleries, walls and ceilings titivated with intricate carvings and mural paintings. The temples within the fort vicinity are Jain temples dedicated to Rishabhdevji, Sambhavanathji and Ashthapadi. These temples are reminiscent of the lustrous Dilwara Temple in Mount Abu. A statue of Lord Mahavir supervises these temples. In the present day, most of these mansions have been transformed into shops with a sole exemption. By Train: Jaisalmer has its own railway station, though it is not much developed. Jaisalmer is connected to Jodhpur by meter gauge. Jaisalmer also falls in the route of two luxury trains - The Palace on Wheels and Royal Orient Express. By Road: Regular bus services connect Jaisalmer from Jodhpur. Buses also run to and from Delhi and other cities of Rajasthan.
