Chittorgarh Fort Chittorgarh Fort placed at a distance of about 113 km from Udaipur, was built by brawny Bhima (one of the Pandava brothers of Mahabharata). The Chittorgarh Fort is a hulking construction poised on a 180m tall hillock unfolding over 280-hectares. The fort includes loads of palaces such as Rana Kumbha Palace, Fateh Prakash Palace, Tower of Victory and Padmini's Palace.Chittorgarh Fort is renowned for its audacious history. The major edifice within the Chittorgarh Fort are the Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory), Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame) and Rana Kumbha Palace. The origin of Chittorgarh can be traced back to the 7th century. In yester years, it was known as Chitrakut, after a local Rajput chieftain named Chitrang. It functioned as the headquarters to the local Sisodia clan of Rajputs from the 8th to the 16th century. The history of Chittorgarh is inscribed in blood and sacrifice. Muslim rulers invaded it and completely ransacked it thrice during the medieval period. The first invasion was in 1303 by Ala-ud-din Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi. Khilji attacked this hill fort to capture the lovely queen of Chittorgarh, Padmini. When circumstances exacerbated, rather than losing their honor at the hands of the enemy, the women inside the fort including Queen Padmini and children of the royal family, committed mass suicide or jauhar by sacrificing themselves on a vast conflagration, . The two towers known as the 'Kirti Stambh' (Tower of Fame) and the 'Vijay Stambh' (Tower of Victory) along with several temples, reservoirs, and palaces dating between the 9th and 17th centuries. In the middle of the 15th century, Chittorgarh earned distinction during the reign of the legendary Rajput ruler, Rana Kumbha. He shaped the Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower) to commemorate his victory over Mahmud Khilji, the ruler of Malwa, in 1440. Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, sacked Chittorgarh again in 1535. The jauhar that followed the siege saw the death of 13,000 women and 32,000 Rajput soldiers. The third and final siege occurred in 1568 by Mughal emperor Akbar. The two Rajput generals Jaimal and Kalla defended the fort heroically but with their death, the situation depreciated and jauhar was performed.
