Rajasthan Majestic Forts
- Amber Fort, Jaipur
Amber Fort, Jaipur Amber, situated 11 kilometers from Jaipur, was the capital of the Kachhawaha clan for over six centuries before being shifted to present day Jaipur. According to popular belief, the town was originally labeled as ‘Ambikishwara’, other name of Lord Shiva. ‘Ambikishwara’ later got abridged as ‘Ambiner’ and even further as ‘Amber’. Built in 16 the century by Raja Man Singh, the Amber Fort standing majestically over sprawling lawns upholds a history which classically explains the life and times of the chivalrous Rajputs – belligerent, audacious, impetuous and hedonistic. In 1592, construction of the Fort was commenced by Raja Man Singh I. However, the Fort took its present form during the reign of Raja Jai Singh I. The Amber Fort is listed among the perfect hilltop forts in India. The crystal mirror reflection of the Fort, on the still waters of the lake offers a stunning illusion. The fort has its entry through the 'Dil-e-Aaram' Garden, fabricated in the traditional Mughal style. An impressive flight of stairs leads to the 'Diwan-e-Am' (hall of public audience) which has trellised galleries and double row of columns with elephant carvings on the top. The right side has steps that lead to the small Kali Temple. Maharaja Man Singh was a great devotee of Goddess Kali and prayed to the goddess for victory during battles. The Amber Fort indubitably hypnotizes the tourists with its arty and refined handiwork. The massive doors of silver, walls and ceilings steeped with convoluted carvings and the infinitesimal mirror work intensify the ostentatious materialization and royalty of the halls. The most gorgeous asset of the Amber Fort is the Sheesh Mahal (literally the Palace of Mirrors). The Sheesh Mahal is a big hall that is crammed with thousands of tiny mirrors all over. It is believed that during the days of yore, a single candle would illumine the entire hall. The minuscule, intricate and flashy mirrors are well preserved till date and still retain its age old charisma. The Shila Mata Temple devoted to Shila Mata (Goddess Kali, goddess of victory) is yet another attraction of Amber Fort. The temple lodges a black marble idol of the goddess brought here by Raja Man Sigh in 1604 from Jessore. Nine images of Goddess Durga (strength) and ten forms of Goddess Saraswati (knowledge) are elegantly carved on the silver gates of the temple. The mandap of this temple is erected in white marble in contrast to the colors of the idols. Amber fort is a magnificent fort crafted in a picturesque backdrop.
