Mahavirji Fair, RajasthanGeneral Information Location: Chandan Village (176 km from Jaipur), RajasthanSignificance: It is held in the honor of the 24th Jain tirthankara Time of Celebration: During the period between Chaitra Shukla Ekadasi and Baisakh Krishna Dwitiya, this usually falls in the months of March and April Mahavirji Fair is organized in Chandan Gaon, about 176 km from Jaipur. Mahavirji Fair has earned for itself a stature of pride among the multitude fairs and festivals of Rajasthan. Mahavirji Fair is celebrated in honor of the 24th Jain Tirthankara, Shri Mahavir Swami. Mahavirji Fair engenders immense enthusiasm amidst the Jain population participating actively in the grand event. The majority of the people visiting the fair belong to the Digambar sect of the Jains. They are stanch followers of Mahavir Swami. The venue for the Mahavirji fair held every year is the Mahavirji Temple. Consecrated to Mahavir Swami, the temple is positioned within an enclosure popular as the "katala". According to the popular belief, this particular image of Mahavir Swami was exhumed by a leather worker from the nearby hillock. Mahavirji Fair in Mahavirji takes place during the period between Chaitra Shukla Ekadasi and Baisakh Krishna Dwitiya of the Hindu calendar. The Fair, Mahavirji reaches its zenith on Baisakh Krishna Dwitiya. The pilgrims gather at the temple to meditate and seek the blessings of the saint. » Activities: The image of Mahavirji is cleansed early in the morning. This cleansing ritual is called 'prakshalan'. Evening is the time for the aarti when the temple complex is lit with hundreds of diyas. The religious offerings comprise of rice, yellow and white flowers, camphor, sandalwood, saffron, crystallized sugar and dry fruits. One of the major attractions of the Mahavirji Fair is the impressive "Rath Yatra". During the Rath Yatra the image of Mahavirji is put on a golden chariot and taken to the Gambhiri River Bank. The devotees chant devotional hymns praising Mahavir Swami. The procession concludes at the temple where the image of Mahavirji is reinstated to its original position. The congregation of such huge number of offers good business prospects. The village traders set up shops selling food grains, cloth, toys and other merchandise. Additional highlights of the Mahavirji Fair are the merry go rounds, the circus shows and plays that are staged by the Jain students. » How to Reach: By Train: Chandan Gaon (Village), the site of the fair lies 6.5 Kms away from Shri Mahavirji Railway Station of the Western Railway on the Delhi-Mumbai broad gauge line. By Road: Chandan Gaon is 18 km from Hindaun, 29 km from Karauli and 176 km from Jaipur. Regular Buses between Jaipur, Hindaun and Chandan Gaon are available.
