It is celebrated on Kartik Purnima at Kolayat, originally Kapilayatan. Kolayat derives its name from the Kapil Muni, a revered sage who underwent intense meditation for the convalescence of humanity. These names exist in the holy scriptures of the Puranas and therefore substantiate their value. » History: The celebrations of Kolayat Fair hold a special significance to the local people. According to historical records, Kolayat in Bikaner was also regarded as Kapilayatan. This name was assigned to the place after Kapil Muni, a revered sage. Not only this, these names are also found in the holy scriptures of Puranas and hence corroborate their significance. » Activities: The banks of the Kolayat Lake are kissed by 52 Ghats exquisitely embellished with lights on the day of the festival. The devotees and pilgrims take a dip in the holy water of the Kolayat Lake and perform a variety of rituals. They offer prayers, sugar drops, sweetmeats and milk pudding to the deity. All these items are prepared in the Kolayat Temple that houses the image of Kapil Muni. A cattle fair is also organized at the time of the Kapil Muni fair. The most mesmerizing feature of the Kolayat Fair Bikaner is the site of several oil lit lamps floating on the tranquil and scenic lake at dusk. This scene is truly a feast for the eyes.
