It is believed that Lord Brahma slay the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower, whose petals came gliding down to earth and alighted in three places in and around Pushkar where lakes sprung up. Another legend promulgates, Lord Brahma was hovering over the deserts of Rajasthan on his swan, when some lotus petals fell from his hand and wafted down. Miraculously, blue lakes sprang up at the sites where the flower petals touched the soft golden sands. At the spur of the moment, Lord Brahma envisioned that it was a propitious moment to perform a fire sacrifice or yagna. Unfortunately, Brahma’s wife Savitri was not accompanying him and the yagna would be inconclusive without her. So Brahma married a local girl and performed the yagna. Meanwhile Savitri disembarked on earth. Enraged on seeing Brahma’s new wife, Savitri cursed Brahma that he would never ever be worshipped anywhere else on earth. Since then, on the auspicious occasion when the full moon shines on Purnima during the autumn period of kartik, the desert populace commemorates this epic affair by celebrating the Pushkar ka Mela. Pushkar is the only pilgrimage shrine dedicated to Brahma in all of India. » Activities: Pushkar Fair comes alive with ornately clothed folk dancers and musicians, camel races, camels bedecked with ornamental saddles and back cloths adorned with mirrors, cowrie shells and prismatic embroidery, attractive puppet shows, camel and cattle auction, shops offering traditional colorful attire, jewels, house hold goods and aperitive traditional delicacies. Traders and villagers from miles away congregate Pushkar with their humped beasts in quest for the best bid. Over 25,000 camels are traded; giving Pushkar Fair the prestige of being the world's largest camel fair.
