Ganguar FestivalGeneral Information Location: Jaipur, RajasthanSignificance: The married women pray for the welfare of their husbands Time of Celebration: On the first day of Chaitra i.e. March and continues for 18 days Gangaur Festival is observed in honor of Gauri, the goddess of abundance. This spring festival is celebrated with immense passion and fervor all over Rajasthan. It holds a special connotation for the localities as young girls decked up in their finest attire pray for a spouse of their choice while the married ladies pray for good health and prosperity of their husbands. » History Parvati or Gauri is the better half of Lord Shiva. Parvati embodies morality and loyalty; therefore she is the mythological model of married women. According to popular belief, young girls conform to the rituals of this festival and pray to Goddess Gauri to grant them with husbands of their choice. While, married women observe the same for the contentment and long healthy life of their husbands. Gangaur is the most important local festival in Rajasthan. The festivities actualize a fortnight prior to the actual day. Girls worship the goddess all through the preceding fortnight. A cavalcade carrying chromatic images of Gauri escorted by the town band is taken out. Thousands throng to witness this majestic display of devotion. The celebrations in Jaipur and Udaipur contain a novel charisma and rewarding inducement. The Gangaur festival is an anomalous affair where tribal men and women interact with each other freely and often choose and marry their partners for life. » ActivitiesOn the first day, at an auspicious hour in the afternoon, a parade is taken out to a garden, tank or a well with married women carrying images of Isar and Gauri, on their heads. Devotional songs are echo all over the place. The procession returns after offering water to the image of Gauri facing backwards on the initial two days. On the last day, she faces frontward, in the same direction as Isar. The procession reaches its ultimatum with the images being entrusted into the waters of a tank or a well. Finally, the women folk bid adieu to goddess Gauri and return homeward with tears in their eyes with the festival coming to an end. » How to Reach By Air: Almost all the major cities are connected to Jaipur. Indian airlines, Jet airways and Sahara airlines offer regular flights to Jaipur. By Road: Rajasthan Roadways offer regular bus services from New Delhi, deluxe and air conditioned coaches from Bikaner house, Delhi. Jaipur is also well connected with the other cities of Rajasthan.
